IAN CARROLL MUSIC

Originally from Toronto, saxophonist Ian Carroll has been performing and teaching in the Boston area since arriving more than fifteen years ago.  In that time Ian has earned degrees from Harvard University and New England Conservatory of Music, and has performed in venues ranging from Sanders Theatre and Jordan Hall, to Ryles Jazz Club.

As a recitalist and chamber musician, Ian has premiered works by composers such as John Harbison and Gunther Schuller.  Of the performance of Harbison’s San Antonio, Ian earned accolades from Richard Buell of the Boston Globe for his ability “to pass over the technical challenges with ease, along with an ease and naturalness in the expression that was very attractive.”  He has been a featured soloist of the Harvard Wind Ensemble, performing concertos by David Amram, Warren Benson, and Maurice Whitney.  Ian has also appeared with New World Symphony, the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and other ensembles.

In recent years, jazz has taken a more prominent position in Ian’s musical life.  He has performed in intimate duo and trio groups, traditional jazz combos, and big band settings, in performance spaces including Ryles Jazz Club and the Museum of Fine Arts.

Having been deeply affected by the wisdom of Paul Brodie, Ken Radnofsky and Jerry Bergonzi, Ian is keenly aware of the powerful role a teacher plays.  He is honored to continue in the tradition of sharing knowledge with others, maintaining a private lesson studio from his home in Bedford, MA, where he lives with his wife, son, and pet corgi.
